Municipal WEEE Compass: A local government e-waste management support tool

The Municipal WEEE Compass supports South African municipalities in improving the management of waste electrical and electronic equipment (WEEE or e-waste). Developed by the SRI team with support from DFFE and SALGA, the Compass offers practical guidance to local governments on integrating national WEEE policies into municipal systems and by-laws, collaborating effectively with Producer Responsibility Organisations (PROs), and facilitating the release of electronic assets for recycling. Drawing on extensive research and stakeholder engagement, it provides actionable recommendations to strengthen local capacity, ensure compliant e-waste handling, and drive the development of a sustainable municipal e-waste management system.
