This report examines how the newly published ISO 59014 standard compares and aligns with established international standards for Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) management, specifically the CEN 50625 series (Europe), R2v3 (global), and e-Stewards (US-based). ISO 59014, issued in 2024, introduces a sustainability- and traceability-focused framework for the recovery of secondary materials. It uniquely integrates principles from circular economy, life cycle assessment, social responsibility, and ethical collaboration with workers engaged in subsistence activities, marking a significant advancement in international standardization.

The study offers a detailed side-by-side analysis of 36 key requirements across operational, organizational, and traceability domains. It reveals that while CEN 50625 and e-Stewards show the closest alignment with ISO 59014 (each covering ~61% of its provisions), all three standards fall short in fully embracing its holistic sustainability approach. ISO 59014 stands out for emphasizing upstream decision-making, inclusivity along the value chain, and non-destructive recovery processes—all essential for more ethical and efficient material handling.

Targeted at standardization professionals, producer responsibility organizations (PROs), recyclers, refurbishers, and circular economy practitioners—especially in the Global South—the report provides guidance on how ISO 59014 can serve as a complementary or differentiating tool. While not positioned to replace the existing WEEE standards, ISO 59014 presents clear value as an add-on certification for companies seeking to improve traceability, engage with informal sector actors responsibly, or align with upcoming regulatory trends such as the EU Supply Chain Act.
