This report presents the first global feasibility assessment of the ISO 59014 standard, which establishes principles, requirements, and guidance for ensuring sustainability and traceability in the recovery of secondary materials. Developed under the Sustainable Recycling Industries (SRI) Programme, the study explores how the new standard can be implemented in diverse contexts across Asia, South America, Africa, and Europe.

Through four pilot cases—in India, Peru, Ghana/The Netherlands, and Switzerland—the report analyzes real-world applications in e-waste and construction material recycling. It evaluates operational, organizational, and traceability requirements, highlighting benefits, challenges, and certification potential for companies of varying sizes and resources.

The findings confirm that ISO 59014 is a key enabler for transparent, inclusive, and responsible recycling practices. By fostering data-driven traceability, improved working conditions, and recognition of subsistence activities, it strengthens the circular economy and supports fair value chains worldwide. The report concludes with recommendations to facilitate the upscaling of ISO 59014 implementation globally.

This publication is particularly relevant for recycling companies, policy-makers, standardization bodies, development cooperation agencies, ESG auditors, and circular economy practitioners seeking to integrate sustainability and traceability standards into material recovery processes.
