Standards

This section will the standards in waste management systems and strategies.

  • Standards often describe an agreed way of doing something or a solution to a global problem (definition ISO).
  • Standards are a group of requirements that assign a legal responsibility to an operator.
  • In the case of WEEE, standards make sure to protect the environment, the workers and the communities in which they operate.

Standards hierarchy

WEEE legislation and standards hierarchy:

  • Governments are at the top of the hierarchy, issuing laws and decrees. Standards come below governments.
  • They are often issued by Private Law Organisations.
  • Finally Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) provides with clear directions on how teams within organization must proceed to comply with standards.
