Strategies for
consumer awareness

This module will look at strategies for consumer awareness around WEEE.

Public awareness

  • WEEE management is dependant on the consumers and their behaviour at the end-of-life of a product.
  • Even with a very good and well implemented legislation, WEEE will not be properly treated if it is not made accessible by the consumer.
  • There are gaps between the willingness to recycle and the knowledge and awareness of e-waste handling.

Setting public awareness

  • Solution to consumers not knowing what to do with there e-waste: educate and inform them.
  • Before starting a campaign, it is important to know the level of awareness of the population.
  • Consumers of EEE become generators of WEEE!

Steps to designing awareness campaigns

Set objectives

  • Objectives will help defining the goal of the campaign.
  • Define clearly which objective should be short-term and which should be long-term.
  • Objectives should be measurable, achievable, realistic and time-bound.

Identify the needs of the targeted consumers

  • To reach out and influence the behaviour of the targeted consumers, their needs in terms of information must be identified.
  • Handing out surveys will help understand the level of knowledge and awareness on e-waste.

Select the appropriate tone to address your message

The message has to be:

  • Simple.
  • Have a clear ask (what you want people to do).
  • Be convincing.
  • Be consistent (with national campaign for example).
  • Be repeated.
